Gerrie van Gaalen

Gerrie grew up in Empangeni in Zululand, where he was the head boy of Empangeni High School. He obtained his B Com (Law) and LLB degrees at the Rand Afrikaans University (now University of Johannesburg), and was admitted as an Attorney in 1997.

Between 1997 and 2004, Gerrie worked in London and Amsterdam in the Global Transaction Services division of ABN AMRO Bank. During his stay in London, he obtained his LLM (Computers and Communications Law) degree from Queen Mary College, University of London. Upon returning to South Africa, Gerrie joined Van Gaalen Attorneys in Johannesburg, where he stayed until joining DKVG in 2016.

Gerrie has extensive knowledge and experience in the areas of IT (fintech, crypto assets, NFTs, Artificial Intelligence), intellectual property, eCommerce, communications (and related corporate and commercial transactions), data protection (locally and internationally), risk management, and corporate governance.

Gerrie has shared his niche legal knowledge via numerous media articles, radio interviews, and conference addresses. He serves on the governing body of SNAP Academy, a school for children with autism and developmental disabilities. When he’s not spending time with his wife and three children, Gerrie indulges his passions for mountain biking and art.
